Choose Ryburn Sixth for your course in A-Level Biology, where we strive to stimulate students’ interest and enjoyment for biological sciences. 

In addition to learning about facts and principles of biology, this course will help its students develop critical thinking, planning of investigations skills as well as the power of analysis. 

Our excellent teachers, strive to provide students with knowledge and confidence to deal with any challenges that they might face. Whilst also providing support to their students, so that they are able to achieve their potential. 

We hope to further that confidence by providing our students with the opportunity to experience the field through trips such as residential fieldwork in Yorkshire. Our resources also enable our students to learn and develop their existing knowledge. This qualification opens up several different career/higher education opportunities such as; Marine Biology, Zoology, Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science.

  • Biology is taught over two years. Learners will study the following topics.

    Year 1:
    - Biological Molecules
    - Cells
    - Immune System & Viruses
    - Classification
    - Biodiversity
    - Exchange and transport

    Year 2:
    - Energy Transfers
    - Organisms Responsiveness
    - Inheritance
    - Gene Expression
    - Ecosystems

    Practical skills are an integral part of the course, allowing students to develop investigative skills and apply theory in practical contexts. This includes the Practical endorsement aspect of the course where you progressively develop your practical skills, learning specific techniques, and the use of specialist apparatus and instruments.

  • Minimum 6 in Biology or 6,6 in Combined Science, 5 in Maths.

Biology is a facilitating subject valued by employers and universities alike. Studying the subject develops the biological knowledge and skills to study a bioscience related degree. You will also gain a wealth of transferable skills such as problem solving, data analysis and teamwork that are valued in a range of degree programmes beyond biology.
